Linus was born on Solar Energy Harvesting Satellite T31, however his mother was born in Hong Kong, and his father was born in Australia. This colony was only about 5% human - the remainder of the population was made up of the Dehmanesh race. These people were often said to look like Earth frogs - a comparison they found incredibly insulting. It was not uncommon to hear the slur 'frog' thrown across a pub. Like all humans who resided on T31 Linus' parents were science specialists. Linus himself took to engineering as he grew older. When he was a teenager, Linus' life suddenly changed when a the Sagur Alrernia suddenly attacked the colony. The attack was especially unexpected because Sagur Alrernia had no quarrel with the Dehmanesh or Humanity - but they stuck with such force and ferocity that the meagre planetary defence systems were destroyed in mere minutes. The warning lights pulsing red, alarm wailing, Linus ran down the narrow corridor to the escape pods. He was separated from his parents as everybody frantically tried to reach safety. As the escape pod pulled away, he gazed at the satellite through the green-tinted window. It was completely swarmed by Sagur Alrernia ships like bees around a hive, reducing it to a cloud of rubble suspended in the vacuum of space. Not many survived long enough to reach the escape pods - and many of the escape pods were destroyed before reaching safety. Linus was amongst only a tiny group of survivors, and as far as he is aware, the only human survivor. He stayed with a kind-hearted and sympathetic Dehmanesh family for several years but always felt somewhat out of place. He is still on friendly terms with them and sends them postcards from all the distant planets he visits. Linus took any kind of odd job, and hitchhiked to any planet which took his fancy or stowed away in the cargo hold of a ship. When times were at their hardest, he was not below begging or stealing. Eventually, he earned enough to buy his own ship. Despite being twice his own age, falling apart and only large enough to fit two people and some cargo, Linus loved his ship regardless and christened it 'Bad Decisions'. Using the skills he learned jumping from job to job, he's fixed up the ship - it's still prone to the occasional breakdown, but he's improved the engines, warp speed, communications, given it a paint job, and installed undership and LED lights. To most it's a garish mess, but he loves it like a child. How he drifts around in space. He does just enough work that is needed to sustain himself. Otherwise, he's looking for fun. He has no goals in life, but he sometimes vividly imagines himself being the hero of a story, finding out what happened to his colony and getting revenge. But realistically, those will forever be dreams, he's just one guy with no expertise. |
Linus' personality is laid back - although some would call it lazy. He is quite content to drift from planet to planet, seeing the sights, eating the local cuisine, and partaking in all the thrills. He'll take any kind of odd job to earn money. His speciality is mechanics, but has known to do couriering of cargo, and taxiing people between planets. He prefers to keep his jobs legal - no killing or kidnapping for example, but if paid enough he can be tempted to courier illegal goods. He is a bit of a heartbreaker - having boyfriends, girlfriends, and otherfriends from planets far reaching all over the universe. One persistent ex in particular swears that they are engaged. But as a whole, Linus prefers to keep relationships casual. He has a cheerful and relaxed personality and tries to get on well with everybody (although stern or hard-working people may find his disposition irritating.) Having grown up in a colony where humans made the vast minority, he lacks the racial pride that many humans possess. He enjoys working out, and you will find various weightlifting materials in his ship. However, this is nothing more than an attempt to look good. If he were to ever get into a fight, he would fold immediately. |
